TBAT Cycling Coast to Coast for Stand Against MND

Dave Schorah
R&D Tax Team Leader

The Fundraising Challenge

On 15th and 16th May, a team of three cyclists from TBAT will take on an incredible journey across the Scottish Highlands, cycling coast to coast in support of Stand Against MND charity and in memory of our colleague Sam Perkins. Over two challenging days, TBAT members Ryan, Richard, and Dave will cover a total of 312 miles, pushing themselves to their limits to raise both awareness and funds for this important cause.

Assisting them on the trip will be Ian, who will be driving the support van, making sure our cyclists are fueled and ready to take on each mile.

In support of our coast to coast riders, a team of 10 at the TBAT office will be working hard to cover the same 312 miles on a stationary spinning bike. They’ll be rotating in a relay, in an attempt to match the cyclists efforts.

Together, both teams will be raising vital funds for Stand Against MND, a charity committed to supporting those affected by Motor Neuron Disease.

Any donations, no matter how big or small, will be greatly appreciated!

This year’s challenge will be kindly sponsored by Velorim, a company who strive to make cycling green through the collection and recycling of inner tyres, tubes and li-ion batteries.

In Memory of

This year, our charity bike ride challenge will be in memory of our colleague, Sam Perkins who sadly passed away in February. Sam worked at TBAT from 2012 to 2016, rejoining us again in 2018.  Sam was diagnosed with MND in March 2019 and took a back seat from his business development activities later that year.

Sam established the charity Stand Against MND and, over the next five years, raised over £250,000. All proceeds went towards funding research into a cure for MND and support services that offer palliative care for those affected by MND.

Sam was a fitness fanatic from training for local triathlons at East Leake Leisure Centre to successfully completing an Ironman Triathlon in a matter of years – amazing. He was a terrific, wonderful person, and a real asset to the TBAT team.

The Route

The route begins on the west coast of Scotland in Lochcarron, close to the Isle of Skye, and will end on the east coast in Aberdeen. Along the way, the team will tackle some of the toughest climbs in the UK, including the challenging Bealach na Bà (9.2km at a 7% gradient) and Cairngorm Mountain (5.5km at a 5% gradient), as they pass through Wester Ross and the Cairngorm mountains.

About our sponsor

Velorim is dedicated to making cycling greener by managing the collection and recycling of inner tyres, tubes, and Li-ion batteries across the UK. With over 600 collection sites, Velorim offers an eco-friendly solution to the problem of scrap bicycle tyres and tubes, which are often refused by standard waste collection services. According to research, a minimum of 10,000 tonnes of scrap bicycle tyres and inner tubes were produced in 2016, with this number growing year on year as cycling continues to rise in popularity.

Velorim’s subscription-based collection scheme provides bicycle retailers with bulk bags for tyres and inner tubes, ensuring proper disposal and recycling. By partnering with Velorim, cycling shops can contribute to reducing waste and supporting environmental sustainability.
