Morek Engineering

This R&D project sought to establish a mooring and umbilical front-end engineering design for a first-of-its-kind wave energy converter.

About

Active in the growing success of ocean renewables and blue economies, Morek Engineering recognises the increasing demand for high-quality and versatile engineering services for the sector’s emerging marine challenges. Based in Falmouth, the Morek team brings a balanced mixture of knowledge, hands on experience and precision engineering to deliver solutions for complex projects across the planet’s most dynamic marine environments. Morek Engineering is recognised on an industry level for its innovative engineering solutions and strong collaboration with clients to develop more advanced, sustainable marine technologies. Morek was founded with a commitment to using expertise to drive a sustainable future, both in principle and practice.

The project: Front End Engineering Design for a First-of-its-Kind Wave Energy Converter

The main fields of technology for this project were marine engineering, naval architecture, material science, mooring design, and dynamic analysis.

During the claim period, Morek developed a mooring and umbilical front-end engineering design (FEED) for a first-of-its-kind wave energy converter, incorporating innovative marine operations design.

The R&D work involved iteratively developing site-specific scenarios to enable more detailed FEED-level mooring and umbilical design. The arrangement was evaluated against detailed load cases, leading to the final presentation of a solution that included specified design loads, a high-level component breakdown, and cost estimates.

As there were few readily available mooring solutions (and modelling techniques) in the public domain for Morek to utilise, a gap in knowledge and capability was identified which required R&D to resolve.

This project contained several technological uncertainties due to the novel nature and complexities inherent in wave energy systems.

Our Approach

Morek Engineering engaged TBAT to compile its R&D tax claim. This involved several technical calls with the project leads to carry out detailed analysis of Morek’s R&D activities, identifying qualifying projects and making sure all costs were compliant with HMRC guidance. TBAT then worked closely with key technical staff to compile a comprehensive technical report, which was reviewed and submitted to HMRC as a detailed claim.

Testimonial

'We have partnered with various companies for our R&D claims over the years, yet we consistently return to TBAT for their exceptional expertise. TBAT’s comprehensive, up-to-date understanding of relevant legislation and their rigorous investigative approach reflect a deep understanding of our R&D outcomes and the optimal methods for claiming them. This expertise instils confidence in the accuracy of our R&D tax claims and ensures they remain robust under scrutiny. On top of this, our repeated collaborations with TBAT have allowed us to streamline our data recording processes and integrate them seamlessly into our daily workflow, significantly enhancing the efficiency of our future claims.'
