We have had a long wait for the first Biomedical Catalyst (BMC) competition of 2024. Round 1 opened on 2nd September, will close on the 16th October 2024 and has a total budget of up to £15 million to invest in life science innovation projects.
The BMC is Innovate UK’s long-running industry-led R&D grant funding competition (established in 2012) which aims to support SMEs in the development of innovative solutions to address health and healthcare challenges. It is highly popular given the scope for funding across the broad range of the life science sector as well as across all stages of development from early-stage research to late-stage clinical trials.
As an indication of the breadth of innovation covered by the BMC, Innovate UK provide a non-exhaustive list of the type of project focus they are looking to support which includes:

The application assessment period ends on 21st January, with applicants notified by email. Please note that for projects with an overall grant size of over £500,000 you may be invited to attend an interview as an additional part of the assessment process.
Full funding detailsThe application itself requires an on-line submission via the IUK portal. Assessors are looking for strong responses to detailed questions which aim to determine the innovation’s potential impact on healthcare, the problem it solves and the commercial opportunity. A project plan, risk register and evidence of a capable project delivery team are also required alongside a project budget which reflects the scope of the R&D required to advance the innovation.
Developing a strong application will take time. With many years of experience of BMC submissions we have a very good understanding of what is needed to build a strong case for funding. We have secured funding for multiple clients across the life science sector including precision medicine, all classes of medical devices, advanced therapies and digital health.
