This free-to-attend workshop, which will run as part of the Innovation Challenge, is designed to delve into the innovative solutions you need to design and protect your innovation. We will discuss problems, challenges and highlight opportunities to reduce the effects of product design and protection barriers – supporting you on your journey to commercialisation and being a disrupter in the marketplace.

This event is one of four interactive workshops, designed to support growing SME’s through the highs and lows of how to successfully innovate, grow and succeed.  All of the workshops are open to the public and free-to-attend, with no requirement to apply to The Innovation Challenge.  If you would like to find out more about the application process, please click here.

Sam Stephens, Director – TBAT Innovation

CHAIR and Patent Box

After establishing TBAT in 2002 as a consultancy catering to the SME sector, Sam led the company’s evolution into the innovation-centric enterprise it is today. TBAT now specialises in supporting companies throughout the entire new product and process innovation cycle. Sam began his career as a graduate and manufacturing engineer at Rolls-Royce Aerospace before transitioning to Rolls Royce and Associates as a Development and Project Engineer. Currently, Sam heads up the Business Development and R&D Tax Credits side of the business.

Andy Last, Lead Industrial Designer – OPD (Oxford Product Design)

Product Design

Andy is the lead industrial designer at OPD and has over 17 years of experience designing products across a range of industries including consumer, medical, scientific and industrial. 
 
A proponent of user-centred design, Andy has won multiple awards for his work and has designed product ranges for a number of international brands. He has developed brand languages for companies such as Leitz, Rexel and Fellowes in the office & consumer products industry. Andy uses a mix of traditional techniques including hand sketching and manual rendering alongside the latest technology in the design process.

Neil Carter, Managing Director – Ignys

Voice of the customer

Neil is Managing Director for Ignys, the electronic design consultants with a heart. A multi award winning design agency, Ignys is your go to source of support for every stage of product development, from idea conception and feasibility studies, through to prototyping, product testing and compliance support. 

 A self-confessed “jack of all trades”, during his long career Neil has built and impressive technical background with strategic experience in hardware, software and product development. Neil has previously held positions as CTO in both IoT and wearable tech, with an excellent reputation in multiple industries and in geographies including Europe, the Middle East and Americas.

Al Mills, Commercial Director – IMed Consultancy

After starting her Career in Sales in the City, as a lowly Finance Rep, Al soon climbed the ranks to National Sales & Marketing Director with a life-enhancing Premium Finance Business. After spending 15 years as a Sales & Business Growth Coach and Mentor, Al was keen to be part of a permanent team again and was looking for a company with major growth plans in a sector with a meaningful impact on others. Henry Foxhall, Senior Consultant – Conformance

Henry is a trained Materials Scientist and Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining with almost 20 years’ experience in the nuclear and medical materials field. He has worked on Class II and III medical device regulatory approvals in the UK, Europe, USA and India this included work with implantable orthopaedic devices.

As the Design Director at Bulb, Lee specialises in building innovative brands, digital products and experiences. With a human-centred design and system-aware approach, Lee works end-to-end in the design process working collaboratively with cross-functional teams to deliver successful projects with empathy, meaning and purpose.

Gregory Smith, Senior Associate – Forresters IP

Intellectual Property 

Greg is primarily involved in drafting and filing patent and design applications at the UK and European Patent Offices, as well as utilising his global network to assist clients in obtaining protection overseas. He has considerable experience in completing freedom to operate work for clients, ensuring they do not infringe competitors’ IP rights.  He also has substantial experience with European oppositions, working to assist his clients in revoking their competitors’ European patents. In addition, he has considerable experience in assisting clients in litigation matters to help them achieve the outcome they desire.

Licensing In & 3rd Party Involvement

Ed works with clients from all sectors on wide-ranging non-contentious contractual, IP, data protection and competition law issues. Sectors include healthcare/life sciences, sport, technology, media and communications. Ed primarily advises on the creation, ownership and exploitation of IP. This includes licensing, R&D/technology transfer and agency, distribution, reselling and franchising arrangements. Ed also specialises in drafting and negotiating agreements governing IP licensing and the supply of goods and/or services.
